Coach Rental Across France

Coach Hire in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc with Driver

In the Chamonix valley the plan depends on three things: the season, the tunnel and the coach park. Settle them before you book the cable car.

Parking at the Grépon

Coaches use the Grépon (Parking autocars du Grépon), where the Route Blanche enters town. It never closes; the centre is a 10-minute walk, or a short hop on the free Mulet shuttle. For the Aiguille du Midi cable car, it is the nearest car park of all.

In winter the town adds a temporary Grépon Bus area. Even so, the valley is busy in high season. Give the operator firm arrival and departure times, so the coach is in place before the group comes down from the mountain.

Through the Mont Blanc Tunnel

Italy is close: Courmayeur, via the tunnel, is about half an hour by car. Only coaches meeting Euro 3 or a later standard may enter; Euro 0, 1 and 2 vehicles over 3.5 t are banned. Every heavy vehicle is checked at Passy-Le Fayet, or at Aosta on the Italian side, before it enters.

Inside, the limit is 70 km/h with a 50 km/h minimum. Gaps are 150 m on the move and 100 m at a standstill, and nobody overtakes. The tunnel closes for maintenance at times, mostly at night, so check the closures calendar before you fix a crossing. The tunnel and the A40 are both tolled.

Rules for coaches in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc

  • Genève Aéroport (GVA), across the border in Switzerland, is about 90 km by road from Chamonix, about 1 h 30 min in light traffic. Lyon-Saint Exupéry (LYS) is about 216 km (about 2 h 30 min).
  • Trains arrive at Chamonix-Mont-Blanc station on the Mont-Blanc Express line (Saint-Gervais-les-Bains-Le Fayet – Chamonix – Vallorcine – Martigny); trains to Geneva, Annecy and Lyon connect at Saint-Gervais-Le Fayet. The Aiguille du Midi and Montenvers departure stations are in the town.
  • Coaches park at the Parking autocars du Grépon, on the Route Blanche at the entrance to Chamonix: open every day all year, about 10 minutes on foot from the centre, served by the free "Mulet" shuttle. The town's 2026 parking guide adds a temporary "Grépon Bus" area in winter. The Grépon car park is the nearest to the Aiguille du Midi cable car.
  • Mont Blanc Tunnel (to Courmayeur, Italy): all vehicles over 3.5 t of Euro 0, 1 or 2 are banned, so a coach must be Euro 3 or newer (the Euro 3 and Euro 4 bans apply only to goods vehicles). Heavy vehicles are checked at the control areas at Passy-Le Fayet (France) or Aosta (Italy) before the tunnel, and vehicles carrying dangerous goods are banned.
  • Inside the Mont Blanc Tunnel the speed limit is 70 km/h with a minimum of 50 km/h; vehicles keep 150 m apart when moving and 100 m when stopped; overtaking is forbidden.
  • In autumn 2026 the Mont Blanc Tunnel has planned closures, mostly at night, and periods of alternating one-way traffic until December. Check the operator's closures calendar before planning a crossing.
  • Winter equipment: from 1 November to 31 March, vehicles in Haute-Savoie, coaches included, must carry snow chains or snow socks for at least two drive wheels or have four winter tyres (3PMSF marking).
  • Chamonix is reached by the A40 (Autoroute Blanche), a toll motorway (autoroute à péage), and then the RN205 (Route Blanche); the Mont Blanc Tunnel is also tolled.
  • The Arve valley has an air-protection plan: during major pollution episodes the préfecture can ban the most polluting heavy goods vehicles in transit. Check the Haute-Savoie préfecture before travel in winter.
  • Switzerland (Geneva, Martigny): a coach or bus over 3.5 t registered outside Switzerland must pay the Swiss lump-sum heavy vehicle charge (PSVA) for each day it is in Switzerland, even when parked, on all public roads; it is paid in advance through the Swiss customs (BAZG) Via portal or app.
  • Long Alpine itineraries fall under the EU drivers' hours rules (Regulation (EC) No 561/2006): no more than 9 hours' driving a day (10 hours twice a week), and a break of at least 45 minutes after 4.5 hours' driving.

Winter roads and Switzerland

Winter kit is compulsory in Haute-Savoie between 1 November and 31 March: 3PMSF tyres on all four wheels, or snow chains or socks carried for a minimum of two drive wheels. In a major pollution episode the préfecture can also ban the most polluting heavy goods vehicles in transit through the Arve valley.

Genève Aéroport is about 90 km away, around 1 h 30 by car in light traffic, and Lyon-Saint Exupéry about 216 km. A coach registered outside Switzerland pays a daily Swiss heavy-vehicle charge, even when parked, so a run via Geneva or Martigny adds it.

Driver hours in the mountains

Driving time is capped by EU rules at 9 hours a day, raised to 10 on two days a week, and a break of at least 45 minutes is due once 4.5 hours are driven. An airport run plus a day in Italy can reach that. Set the return time with the operator.

Aiguille du Midi tickets are for a set date and departure time, booked in advance; groups of 20 or more go through the cable car's professional service. The Montenvers train takes no bookings and closes each autumn for maintenance. UTMB fills the valley in late August.

Organisers ask

Where does the coach set down for the Aiguille du Midi?

No official drop-off point is published for the cable car. The Grépon coach park is the nearest, and the driver confirms where to stop.

Can any coach use the Mont Blanc Tunnel?

Only if it meets Euro 3 or a later standard. It is checked at Passy-Le Fayet or Aosta before entry.

Are chains needed in October?

The legal requirement in Haute-Savoie runs from 1 November to 31 March. Before that, ask the operator to watch the forecast.
