Bordeaux Coaches with a Driver
Bordeaux is lenient on emissions and strict on parking. Only the oldest coaches are kept out of the low-emission zone, but the whole centre has a single coach park with 12 spaces.
Twelve spaces for the whole centre
Since September 2022, central coach parking has been limited to the Quinconces site: 12 spaces, open at all hours, paid, entered by the allées de Bristol from Quai Louis XVIII. Parking at a drop-off point is not allowed, and drivers turn off the engine and air conditioning when parked. On a busy day a space is not certain, so agree a fallback with the operator.
Drops happen at official points: allées de Tourny for the Grand Théâtre, rue Gobineau at Quinconces, Mériadeck, allée Jean Giono and Quai de Queyries on the right bank, and Quai du Maroc by the Halles de Bacalan.

A ZFE for unclassified vehicles
Since January 2025 the zone covers everything inside the rocade, but not the rocade itself, at all hours. It bars only vehicles with no Crit'Air class. For coaches, that means those first registered before 1 October 2001. Few groups are affected, but have the class confirmed: the rule is current and may change.

Rules for coaches in Bordeaux
- Bordeaux-Mérignac (BOD) is about 15 km by road from Place de la Comédie, about 30 min in light traffic and longer at peak times. The airport's quick drop-off zone has a 3.00 m height limit, too low for a full-size coach.
- Bordeaux Métropole has had a low-emission zone (ZFE) since 1 January 2025, covering everything inside the rocade (ring road); the rocade itself is outside the zone. It applies 24 hours a day, every day, to driving and parking.
- The Bordeaux ZFE bars only vehicles with no Crit'Air classification: heavy vehicles, buses and coaches registered before 1 October 2001, vans registered before 1 October 1997 and cars registered before 1 January 1997. A 2026 law that would have abolished the ZFEs was struck out on this point by the Conseil constitutionnel on 21 May 2026. These rules are current in October 2026 and Parliament may change them again; check them before travel.
- Since 1 September 2022, coach parking in central Bordeaux is limited to one site: the MetPark coach park at Quinconces (12 spaces), entered by the allées de Bristol from Quai Louis XVIII. It is open 24 hours a day and is paid. Drivers must not park at drop-off points and must switch off the engine and air conditioning while parked.
- Official coach set-down and pick-up points: 8 allées de Tourny (Grand Théâtre), 3-5 rue Gobineau (Quinconces), 95 cours Maréchal Juin and rue Robert Lateulade (Mériadeck), 58-76 rue Terres de Borde (Gare Saint-Jean, Belcier side, 4 spaces), allée Jean Giono and Quai de Queyries (La Bastide), and Quai du Maroc at the Halles de Bacalan (3 spaces).
- Gare de Bordeaux Saint-Jean: the main station, with TGV trains from Paris; the official coach set-down point is on rue Terres de Borde, on the Belcier side of the station.
- Saint-Émilion has two coach parks: Parking Villemaurine at the top of the village near place Bourgeoise (18 spaces, 10 hours at most) and the Parking de la gare about 1-1.5 km south of the village.
- The rocade (A630) around Bordeaux is free. The A10 north (towards Paris), the A62 (towards Toulouse) and the A89 (towards Périgueux, from Arveyres) are tolled motorways, each with a free stretch close to the city. The A63 south is free as far as Salles; the section through the Landes is tolled.
- EU drivers' hours rules (Regulation (EC) No 561/2006) apply to coach drivers: at most 9 hours of driving a day (10 hours twice a week), a 45-minute break after 4.5 hours of driving and at least 11 hours of daily rest.
Into the vineyards
Saint-Émilion is about 45 minutes away. It has two coach parks: Villemaurine (18 spaces, 10-hour maximum), up by place Bourgeoise, and a second by the station, 1 to 1.5 km further south. The monolithic church is shown only on a guided tour.
Margaux is about 45 minutes out, Sauternes about 50 and Pauillac about an hour. Back in town, the Cité du Vin applies group terms to parties of 20 or more.
Coast, Cognac and long runs
Arcachon and the Dune du Pilat are each about an hour away by the A63, free as far as Salles. Cognac is about 1 hour 45; Biarritz and Sarlat roughly 2 hours 15 and 2 hours 30. On those runs, EU rules require a 45-minute pause once the driver has done 4.5 hours, so time the lunch stop to match. The A10, A62 and A89 are tolled past their free stretches.
Organisers ask
Can a coach use the airport drop-off zone?
No. Mérignac's quick drop-off zone is capped at 3.00 m in height, and a full-size coach is taller. Place de la Comédie lies about 15 km away, roughly half an hour off-peak.
Where does the coach meet a group off the TGV?
At Saint-Jean, coaches set down on the Belcier side, rue Terres de Borde, where there are 4 spaces. Tell the group which side of the station to leave by.
Is parking easy at a rugby match?
Not around the Stade Chaban-Delmas, where it is scarce. Plan a drop-off and a separate pickup time rather than a coach waiting nearby.
