Coaches for Marseille Cruise Calls

Cruise ships in Marseille use two sites, and they are far apart. Most berth at the Marseille Provence Cruise Terminal behind Gate 4; some tie up at Terminal J4 beside the Vieux-Port. A coach booking starts with which one.

Gate 4 or J4: two different pickups

The Gate 4 terminals sit inside the commercial port, about 6 km from the city centre. Motorway surrounds them, so nobody walks out. A coach leaves the A55 at exit 5, ‘Les Ports’, and follows the ‘Croisière’ signs.

Terminal J4 is the opposite case: passengers reach the centre on foot in a few minutes. Send the terminal letter from the cruise documents too; Terminal C, for one, is under renovation.

Turnaround days and cases

On embarkation day the group arrives with suitcases. A full-size coach takes them in the underfloor hold. A midi coach seats 29 to 35 but has less luggage room. Give the operator both numbers: passengers and cases.

From Gate 4 to Aéroport Marseille Provence is about 21 km, some 25 to 30 minutes by car when traffic is light. Allow more at peak hours.

From the ship to the coach

  • Access to the Marseille Provence Cruise Terminal and all of Terminals A to E is through Gate 4 of the port.
  • By road, take the Autoroute du Littoral (A55), exit 5 'Les Ports', then follow the signs 'Croisière'.
  • The cruise terminals at Gate 4 are about 6 km from the city centre and are surrounded by motorway, so walking out of the port is not possible.
  • On ship arrival days a port shuttle runs every 30 minutes from 09:00 to 17:00; cruise lines also run their own shuttles.
  • City buses 35 and 35T (and line 36) leave from the cruise port exit towards La Joliette; ticket machines are at Gate 4.
  • The terminal car parks can be booked online, from 360 days up to 15 minutes before arrival; entry is by number-plate reading or QR code, and leaving the car park ends the stay.
  • The Vieux-Port is about 7 km by road from the Gate 4 terminals (about 15 min in light traffic).

Into the city: rules that move the stop

From Gate 4 to the Vieux-Port is about 7 km. The run ends inside Marseille's low-emission zone (ZFE-m), which applies day and night. Crit'Air 4, Crit'Air 5 and unclassified vehicles may neither drive nor park there. These rules are in force now and may change, so check the coach's sticker first.

A municipal order of 14 November 2025 closes Le Panier and the north side of the Vieux-Port to tourist coaches. The tourist office lists official set-down points elsewhere, among them avenue Vaudoyer and Les Terrasses du Port on quai du Lazaret. The driver confirms which suits.

Shore excursions

Cassis is about 24 km from the city. Between 1 May and 15 October its centre is closed to vehicles over 3.5 tonnes; coaches set down at the Gorguettes coach area, and the tourist office wants the date, time and group size in advance.

Organisers ask

Can passengers walk from Gate 4 into town?

No. When ships are in, the port runs a half-hourly shuttle between 09:00 and 17:00, and city buses 35, 35T and 36 leave for La Joliette.

Is Avignon realistic on a port call?

It is about 97 km away, an hour and a half each way by car. That suits a long call. On a short one, Aix-en-Provence, about 31 km away, leaves more time ashore.

Can the coach go up to Notre-Dame de la Garde?

Yes, to the set-down point on the Montée de l'Oratoire. Coaches over 13.50 m are barred from rue d'Endoume, and over 13 m from chemin du Vallon de l'Oriol, so the route depends on the vehicle.
